What's in the box: Freshly roasted whole bean or ground specialty coffee from an independent roaster you pick, usually a 10 to 12oz bag, with larger bags offered on many coffees.
Beanz is a coffee marketplace and subscription service run by Breville, the appliance maker that also owns Baratza. It does not roast its own beans. Instead it sells bags from more than 40 independent US specialty roasters, including Onyx, Counter Culture, Madcap, Equator and Olympia. Every coffee gets a 1 to 9 intensity grade and sits in one of three styles: Bright & Lively, Balanced & Smooth, or Bold & Dark. If you don't know where to start, a short quiz suggests matches, or Barista's Choice can pick for you. You can subscribe or buy single bags. Subscribers get free shipping, and the site says you can change, pause or cancel a subscription anytime. Many coffees also come in bigger bags, which Beanz says save up to 20% per cup. Beanz says its prices are roaster-direct with no markup, and that beans are roasted fresh and shipped within days. The main draw is range: you can reach many well-regarded roasters through one account and one subscription. Owners of Breville or Baratza machines are asked to sign in for a discount. The downsides are that bag sizes differ from roaster to roaster, which makes comparing prices harder, and that a single intensity number can only roughly describe how a coffee tastes.
