What's in the box: Each month brings a specialty coffee chosen by the roaster, often a light-roasted, fruit-forward single origin that only subscribers can get, or your choice of house blend on the House Blend plan.
Bluebird Coffee Roastery is a specialty roaster based in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands. Its subscriptions suit people who want good beans to arrive without having to remember to reorder. There are two main options. The Curated Subscription sends a different coffee each month, picked by the Bluebird team, and some of those coffees are only available to subscribers. The House Blend Subscription keeps you on the roaster's regular blends. The current range leans heavily toward light, fruit-forward single origins from Kenya, Ethiopia, Colombia and El Salvador. Washed, natural, honey and anaerobic processes are all represented, along with a few rare Gesha and Geisha lots. If you like bright, fruity cups, this is a strong fit. If you prefer dark, chocolatey roasts, the lineup may feel narrow. Bluebird says all of its coffee is specialty grade and transparently traded. Curated boxes ship free, and other orders within South Africa ship free over R699. International shipping costs a flat $29 and is free on orders over $150. The site does not state subscription prices, bag sizes or grind options on its main page, so check those before you sign up. A site banner also says subscriptions are coming soon, even though the curated sign-up appears to be open, so confirm which plans are available right now. Free brew guides are a useful extra for home brewers.
