Ownership. Dexter Industries, maker of GiggleBot, was acquired by Modular Robotics in July 2019.

What's in the box: The first box holds a GiggleBot robot chassis, a micro:bit, AA batteries, and two missions, while the following boxes add new robot parts, craft materials, and further missions.

GiggleBox is a short, four-month robotics subscription built around GiggleBot, a small wheeled robot chassis that turns a BBC micro:bit into a programmable robot. The first month costs $89 and includes the robot chassis, a micro:bit, and the first two missions. The next three months are $29 each and bring new robot parts, craft materials, and more missions, for 10 missions in total. US subscribers get free shipping, and the company says there is no contract or commitment. Coding happens in Microsoft MakeCode, a drag-and-drop tool that suits beginners, and kids who want to go further can try JavaScript or Python. The robot has programmable LEDs, brightness sensors, a line follower, a way to hold a pen or marker for drawing, LEGO-compatible attachment points, and ports for adding sensors and servos, so there is room to keep tinkering after the boxes stop. Free projects, coding cards, and an online getting started guide add extra material beyond the missions. The biggest caution is availability: the subscription is currently marked out of stock, with only an option to request a stock update. Dexter Industries, the maker of GiggleBot, was acquired by Modular Robotics in 2019, so confirm you can actually order before planning a gift around it. If it is available, it is a compact, low-commitment introduction to robotics for families.
