What's in the box: Usually three bottles of Austrian quality wine from one featured region, chosen by sommeliers, plus information about the wines, winemakers and region.
Korkenfreunde is an Austrian wine subscription with a simple idea. Each month it picks one Austrian wine region, such as Kremstal, Kamptal, Vulkanland or Leithaberg. Sommeliers and other experts then choose wines that are typical of that region. The standard box holds three 0.75 litre bottles, though the site says some plans include two. You can lean toward red or white, so the box can suit your taste. Austria has many wine regions that most drinkers never get to know well, and this setup is a good way to work through them one at a time. The site says each box also tells you about the wines, the winemakers and the region. If you like a wine, members can reorder it from the Korkenfreunde online shop at member prices. Gift subscriptions are available too, including rosé, frizzante and natural or orange wine versions. There is also a half bottle Tasting Package and a Sommelier Set with three half bottles and three wine accessories. The site advertises free shipping. Prices are not shown on the homepage, and the site does not clearly say how far it ships beyond Austria. The range covers Austrian wine only. That is the point of the service, but it may feel narrow if you want variety from other countries.
