What's in the box: You choose the bottles yourself, with at least six per order, usually from exclusive wines made by independent winemakers the club funds.

Naked Wines works differently from most wine clubs. It doesn't ship a set box every month. Members instead top up an account with wine credits, and the site says the top-up starts at $40 a month. You spend those credits whenever you like, with a minimum of six bottles per order. The money helps fund independent winemakers. In return, members get member pricing, which the company says saves up to 60% per bottle. New customers begin with a starter case, such as a mixed case, a reds case, or a reds and whites case, and the site advertises $100 off the first order. The site profiles winemakers in California, France, Australia and South Africa, and many bottles are rated on Vivino. The model suits people who drink wine regularly and like to choose their own bottles. It is a poor fit for anyone who wants a surprise box with no effort, because the monthly payment continues whether or not you order. Most of the wines are sold only through Naked, so it is hard to compare prices elsewhere, and the savings claims rest on the company's own reference prices. Free delivery applies only after you spend $200 of your own money, not counting vouchers, and some zip codes are excluded. The site says you can pause or cancel at any time.
