What's in the box: When it was running, each shipment typically held a ready-to-fruit block of colonized substrate for growing gourmet mushrooms at home.

Smallhold's grow kit subscription is no longer available, and the grow kits section of its site lists no products, so you cannot sign up for it today. Smallhold is a Brooklyn-based mushroom company. It filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in February 2024 and came out of it in September 2024. It still describes itself as a grower of gourmet mushrooms such as blue oyster, lion's mane, maitake and royal trumpet, sells them through grocery retail partners, and says it is a certified B Corp. When the subscription ran, it sent home growers ready-to-fruit mushroom kits on a recurring basis. You could grow specialty mushrooms on a kitchen counter with regular misting and a little attention. The appeal was hands-on: you watched a block of colonized substrate push out clusters of mushrooms, then cooked what you harvested. The site does not say whether the subscription will come back. If you want to grow gourmet mushrooms at home, look for a kit seller that is shipping now. If you just want to eat Smallhold's mushrooms, the company sends shoppers to grocery stores that carry them, not to any home growing program.
