Sunny the Mail Snail, formerly Snail Mail for Kids, is not operating normally under its original name. The old snailmailforkids.com address now redirects to sunnythemailsnail.com, and there is no recent information confirming the service is running reliably. When it ran, it sent children a personalized letter every week from Sunny, a snail character who writes about his world travels and animal encounters. The site says a family team in Virginia prepared and mailed the letters by hand, each addressed with the child's name. A companion activity book came with the letters and included coloring pages, puzzles, secret codes and animal stickers. Plans covered 3, 6 or 12 months. The longer plans included a Sunny stuffed animal, which was an optional extra on the 3 month plan. The goal was to give early readers a reason to look forward to reading, and families could read aloud together or let children explore at their own pace. Sunny was more of a storyteller than a true pen pal, because the site does not say whether children's replies were answered. The site also makes broad claims about learning benefits that are hard to verify. Until the service's status is clear, we do not recommend subscribing or buying it as a gift.
