Bonsai Clubs International (Bonsai & Stone Appreciation magazine membership)

What's in the box: Membership centers on Bonsai & Stone Appreciation magazine, plus access to BCI's online resources, directories and event information.

Bonsai Clubs International is a membership organization, not a typical subscription box. It was founded in 1963 and links bonsai and viewing stone enthusiasts around the world under the motto "Promoting International Friendship Through Bonsai." When you join, the recurring item you get is its magazine, Bonsai & Stone Appreciation, plus access to a wider community. It covers bonsai, penjing, suiseki and viewing stones, which is a broader range than many beginner services offer. The website also has a knowledge base, news and articles, an event calendar, and directories of members, clubs and authors, along with a shop. BCI runs conventions and exhibitions too, which may appeal if you want to connect with clubs in other countries. What it does not do is send trees, tools, soil or other supplies to your door. If you want hands-on materials each month, look elsewhere. The site does not clearly state membership pricing, how often the magazine comes out, or what each membership level includes, so check the membership page before you join. For hobbyists who care more about reading, learning and community than physical goods, it is a well-established and credible choice.
