eSalon makes custom hair color for you to apply at home. You fill out a hair color profile, and a licensed colorist reviews your hair history and goals. The company's patented dispensing machine then mixes a shade that can be adjusted by a quarter of a shade at a time. Each Color Set comes with your formula, personalized instructions and the supplies you need to apply it. You can choose demi-permanent, permanent or 0% ammonia permanent color, and the brand says it offers up to 100% gray coverage. Pricing is simple: $26.00 per set on the Flex Plan or $32.50 for a one-time order. The Color Plan lets you choose when each order arrives and takes 20% off every order. Orders of $50 or more ship free. If you don't like your shade, the Color Happiness Guarantee says your colorist will work with you to fix it or the order is free. eSalon has won 11 Allure Best of Beauty awards, and Henkel agreed to buy a majority stake in the company in 2019. Besides color, it sells custom shampoo, conditioner, treatments, styling products and newer hair growth products. The main drawback is the same as with any home dye: your results depend on how well you apply it.
