What's in the box: Each growing cycle brought seedpods for the crops you chose, plus the nutrients to grow them in the Farmshelf cabinet.

Farmshelf has shut down. Its website now says the company is no longer in business, so you can't order or subscribe to anything today. When it was running, the Brooklyn company sold a cabinet style hydroponic indoor garden for growing leafy greens and herbs at home, along with an ongoing seedpod subscription. The unit had three shelves with 12 slots each, enough for up to 36 plants at a time. Seedpods sprouted in a hidden nursery and then moved up to the shelves. The cabinet handled lighting, water, nutrients and airflow automatically. Owners chose from 60 crop varieties in a web app, including butter lettuce, shiso, Portuguese kale and chamomile, and could grow a different crop or mix on each shelf. The subscription was listed at $89 per month, and an annual plan cost less overall. You could customize each shipment of seedpods and nutrients at no extra cost. Customer support was available weekdays from 9 to 5 Eastern. The idea suited households that wanted fresh greens without plastic packaging. However, the system relied on seedpods and an app that only the company supplied. If you already own a Farmshelf, you can no longer get refills from the company, so you will need a workaround or a different system. If you want to grow food indoors, look at services that are still operating.
