Geek Crate

Paused.Cape Town geek box that suspended its monthly crates indefinitely; date not confirmed.

What's in the box: When it ran, each monthly crate held a selection of gaming and geek collectibles aimed at South African fans.

Geek Crate is not currently operating. The Cape Town company has suspended its monthly crates indefinitely, and its website gives no date for a return. When it ran, Geek Crate was a South African subscription box for local fans of gaming and geek culture, sending a crate of collectibles each month. Its aim was always bigger than the box itself. The company says it wanted to bring South African geeks together and create a place where people could share, discuss and enjoy geek culture. It describes the pause as an "evolution" while it looks for better ways to reach that goal. It also says that everything will change and that it will post announcements on its website and social media. It does not say what the new version will be, when it might launch, or whether monthly crates will come back in any form. For shoppers, the practical point is simple: there is nothing to subscribe to right now. If you were a past subscriber or liked the idea of a locally curated geek box, watch the company's site and its social channels for news. Until it announces something concrete, look elsewhere if you want a box that arrives this month.
