What's in the box: A one-time set of newborn essentials, including baby clothes in several sizes, outdoor wear, bedding and care items, packed in a box that came with a mattress and could be used as a first bed.
The Kela Maternity Package is not currently operating normally: its page on kela.fi now returns a page not found error, so its status cannot be confirmed. When it ran, this was not a commercial subscription at all. It was a Finnish state benefit provided by Kela, the Social Insurance Institution of Finland. Expectant parents living in Finland and covered by Finnish social security could choose either the package or a cash grant instead, as long as the pregnancy had lasted long enough and they had attended a prenatal health check early in the pregnancy. The package arrived once per pregnancy, not on a recurring schedule. It was well known for its practical contents: a starter set of baby clothes in several sizes, outdoor wear suited to the Finnish climate, bedding and basic care items. The cardboard box came with a mattress and could serve as a baby's first bed, a tradition that goes back to the 1930s. Eligible families did not pay for it, and people outside Finland could not order it. Anyone in Finland with questions about current maternity benefits should contact Kela directly, because the old kela.fi address no longer loads and the details may have changed or moved.
