Closed. The Bookspan-owned club, founded by Doubleday in 1953, stopped taking orders on February 1, 2025.

What's in the box: While it ran, members got science fiction and fantasy books chosen by the club, often in its own hardcover and omnibus editions.

The Science Fiction Book Club is no longer operating. It stopped taking orders on February 1, 2025, so you can't join or buy books through it anymore. Doubleday founded the club in 1953, and it later became part of Bookspan. For decades it was one of the best-known ways for American readers to get science fiction and fantasy by mail. Members got regular selections, and the club was known for its own hardcover editions, including omnibus volumes that collected several novels from a series in one book. Many readers used it to find new authors and to build a shelf of matching hardcovers. Today the website only handles leftover account business. It offers a way to pay off an existing account balance and lists member services contacts: email at member.services@sfbc.com or phone at 1-888-667-9431, Monday through Friday, 8am to 6pm Eastern. If you were a member and have a balance or a question about your account, those are the channels to use. If you want new science fiction and fantasy, you'll need to look at other book clubs, subscription boxes, or retailers. Collectors may still find older club editions through used booksellers.
