When it ran, Smiley360 was a free product sampling community for US shoppers rather than a paid subscription box. Members filled out profile surveys, and the service matched them with brand campaigns it called missions. Selected members got free products by mail and were asked to try them. They then shared honest opinions with friends, family and social media followers and reported back on what they had done. Products included food and snacks, household goods, personal care and beauty items, depending on which brands were running campaigns. Nothing was guaranteed. Whether you got an offer depended on how well your profile matched a campaign, and many members went long stretches without receiving anything. Because the goal was word of mouth marketing, it suited people who enjoyed posting about products more than those who just wanted free items on a schedule.
