What's in the box: Each quarterly issue contained illustrated articles on bonsai styling, care, exhibitions and Japanese bonsai traditions.

International Bonsai, the print magazine subscription edited by William Valavanis, is no longer operating; it published its final issue, number 164, in December 2020. When it ran, it was a quarterly magazine for serious bonsai hobbyists. It covered styling, tree care, exhibitions and Japanese bonsai culture, with plenty of detailed photographs. Valavanis is a well-known American bonsai artist and teacher based in the Rochester, New York area, and the magazine drew on his long ties to the bonsai community in Japan. Today valavanisbonsaiblog.com is a free blog, not a subscription. Recent posts report on regional events. One is the 2026 Michiana Bonsai Show in Elkhart, Indiana, where Valavanis led critiques, workshops and demonstrations. Another is a new bonsai festival at Longwood Gardens in Pennsylvania, with a juried exhibition, vendors, demonstrations and a live auction that included trees from his collections. No new magazine issues are being produced, so there is nothing to subscribe to. Back issues may still turn up through secondhand sellers, and they remain a useful reference for photographs and technique. If you want current bonsai content from Valavanis, the blog is the place to look, but it does not replace the curated print quarterly that once arrived by mail.
