What's in the box: When it operated, a typical basket held seasonal organic vegetables, leafy greens and herbs grown by chinampa farmers in Xochimilco.
Yolcán is not currently operating normally: its website no longer loads, and there is no sign that it is taking orders. Shoppers should not try to subscribe unless the service clearly shows it is active again. When it ran, Yolcán was a Mexico City project, founded in 2011, that sold weekly baskets of organic produce grown on the chinampas of Xochimilco. The chinampas are traditional raised farming plots built in the canals and wetlands south of the city. Yolcán worked with local farmers there to bring their harvest to households in the city. The appeal was simple: seasonal vegetables, greens and herbs from a nearby, historic growing area, with the idea that buying them helped keep chinampa farming going. Because the baskets followed the harvest, the contents changed from week to week, so subscribers needed to be comfortable cooking with whatever arrived. Prices, delivery zones and subscription terms can't be checked while the website is offline. If you want a produce subscription in Mexico City today, look at services that are clearly taking orders. Be careful with any Yolcán account or payment page you come across until the company confirms it has reopened.
